The Real Estate Closing Process
Once the seller accepts your offer, the countdown until the much-awaited closing day begins! On closing day, the official ownership of the home will transfer from the seller to the buyer. If you’re not prepared on closing day, it can delay the process and cause unforeseen issues. Fortunately, you can prepare beforehand! Several days before closing, make sure you have the following information:
- Copy of purchase & sale agreement
- Proof of home insurance
- Miscellaneous lender documentation
- Termite letter
- Contact information
When closing day arrives, make sure you bring the funds for closing and two forms of proper identification (i.e. driver’s license and social security card). There will be many documents that you will need to sign on closing day to make the purchase official. Several people will be present – your lending officer, real estate agent, attorneys, and the seller. This real estate closing process usually takes one to two hours. At the end of the meeting, you will receive your house keys and you’ll officially own the home!
